1. Toothbrush
Start your new year with a new toothbrush. If, like many people, you stick with the same toothbrush until the bristles are looking really worn, you have probably not been getting rid of the bacteria that accumulates on the gums, potentially leading to gum disease. A toothbrush (or electric brush head) should be replaced at least every three months to ensure efficient cleaning of both the teeth and gums.
2. Interdental Cleaning
Probably not high on people’s new year ‘to do’ list, but if you don’t already, add dental floss or interdental brushes to your next shopping list. This is probably one of the biggest things that you can do to improve your oral health, yet only around one in five of us currently do this. Although it may
appear tricky at first, many patients at Horbury Dental Care who have been shown how to floss correctly, find it an easy task to perform and have been
surprised at the benefits it has provided.
3. Cut down the sugar
Increasingly, sugar is being seen as a major threat to our health. This not only applies to medical conditions such as diabetes, which in itself also
causes dental issues, but also to our oral health. Sugar consumption is known to cause tooth decay, but also provides fuel for the bacteria that lead
to gum diseases such as gingivitis and periodontitis. By reducing your sugar consumption, you also increase the chances of having healthy teeth and
gums.
