Teeth Whitening FAQs

Why do teeth discolour?

Discolouration can be caused by staining, ageing, or chemical damage to teeth. Using the latest in bleaching technology, we can offer a safe method for creating a beautiful “brilliant” smile. In cases of extreme tooth discolouration, crowns or veneers may be the only choice, but because of the low cost of bleaching treatments, bleaching is nearly always worth a try.

What is the tooth whitening process?

An impression is taken to make a specialised clear “mouthguard” or “tray” to hold the bleach against the teeth. A whitening gel is then used each night for about 3-4 hours for a week or two, and at the end of this time your teeth should have achieved the desired shade.

What are the results?

Results will vary from person to person depending on the original colour of your teeth and your lifestyle. Usually there is couple of shades of improvement which will be monitored by your dentist. Tooth Whitening carried out by your dentist can last around 3 years before a top up is required.

Is Tooth Whitening safe?

Tooth whitening is safe when carried out by a qualified dental professional. All of our Dental Care Professionals at Horbury Dental Care have many years of experience of successfully providing tooth whitening to our patients. It is important to remember that Tooth Whitening can only be legally performed by GDC registered dental care professionals.

How long does it last?

When your teeth reach the desired brightness, only occasional treatment is needed to maintain your new smile. If you avoid food and drink that may stain your teeth – red wine, curries, tea and coffee then it could last anything up to 3 years.

Considerations for Teeth Whitening

It is important to remember that Tooth Whitening can only be legally performed by GDC registered dental care professionals. Tooth whitening will not work on any ‘false’ teeth such as veneers, Crowns, Bridges or Dentures. Nor will it whiten fillings. These may need to be replaced after tooth whitening to match the colour of your new smile.
